One of the things im doing differently now that im retired, is paying attention to details, investigating anything i dont understand until i do understand it! I could not do this when i was working, because there was not enough time. Now time is not an issue, but i think i should have been doing it before, because it’s so rewarding.
The only way to explain what i mean is with examples. It could be as simple as looking out the window and you see something move in the corner of your eye. You watch that spot for further movement. Its dark so you can’t see anything there, but you keep watching. Movement again! Ah, its a coyote in the park across the street.
I watch the front facing camera’s on my house alot. There’s a vietnamese lady probably in her late 70’s that walks in the park everyday without fail. I used to think she starts at a specific time, but actually she starts when it’s light enough. So the time varies based on season. She takes 9 min to do a circuit. So i can jump 9 min’s and she’s in front of my house again. Why do i need this info: I dont but attention to detail bleeds over into other things (I do it all the time now). It’s not always useful info. But it pays off big time, because you understand how things work better.
AI helps with this ALOT. I find myself investigating everything, because i can ask AI anything I dont understand.
I got a new computer, with bleeding edge hardware. Of course it comes with windows 11 which is a peice of sh*t OS, but i dont wipe it because some software (like BIOS updates) require windows, so I have to keep it on disk. But I can shrink it down so the footprint is minimal. When I was working I actually used windows (GAG.) I often beat myself up on not using linux during my work life, but in reality, i did not have the time to track down the MULTITUDE of bugs/errors that crop up in linux. AI makes this SO much easier now, and it’s one of my favorite pastimes in retirement. But i digress. After shrinking windows, and getting 3.7T available on disk for linux, i installed nixos in the empty space. I used the calamares installer which makes it easy and will do a LUKS drive no problem. You have to pick a window manager, Plasma or Gnome, so I picked Plasma. My goal is to install MY config, but im noticing Plasma is not looking good. I take off at this point and try to fix plasma even though Im not going to be using it. It should not look this bad! It turned out that Plasma doesnt play nice with wayland and nvidia bleeding edge hardware, unless you fix the config. I took the time to do this until it looked better.
Your phone beeps, what was that from? what type of beep was it. Ah, so that beep goes with a new email, or that beep goes with a SMS.
I havent written a wordpress blog in over a year, and dont remember how to do it. I ask AI: how do you make a new post in wordpress there’s no login link on the public facing website. It gives me a link, i log in. the interface is NOT intuitive. I take a screenshot and ask AI again, explain this interface. Now im “up to speed” on the blog again.
I think you get the idea. Im telling you, this pays off, i know how lots of things work because i see and understand little things that other people would miss. Anytime you observe anything and dont understand it, STOP and figure it out before moving on to other things.
