Heather had a genealogy seminar in Phoenix all day Saturday. So she was kind enough to let me go out Friday and see a movie. I chose Kill Bill, Vol 1.
Now first, let me say that Quentin Tarantino is probably my favorite director. I loved Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. I can remember being in the theater watching Pulp Fiction, thinking, “please don’t end!” My memory is downright bad, but I can remember the theater I went to, and even the seat I was sitting in. I even named my first born, Quentin, after QT. (Quentin’s middle name: James, came from James Bond(g). Of course, Heather approved of Quentin’s two names for totally unrelated reasons.)
So I was quite surprised to find out I did not like Kill Bill. I fully expected to see bad reviews, and went to read Ebert’s right after seeing it. 4 stars out of 4 stars!! What did I miss? Two things:
1) There was no story, ON PURPOSE.
2) The violence was a parody all of the 70’s Kung Fu type movies.
What I experienced, not knowing the above, was a movie, who’s opening to closing scene was nothing but violence, with no plot. There IS a tiny plot. But you can see everything coming a mile off. “She was wronged, and she’s killing everyone who wronged her.”
This is the first movie where I wish I had read the reviews before going. I expect movies to have stories. When I didn’t get one, I didn’t really enjoy it. If I had known the two points listed above, before going, I think I would have liked it.
So read the reviews and then go enjoy the flick! The term “spoiler” has no meaning here.
