After a visit to the dentist this morning to get my new gold crown inserted, I thought a quick visit to Borders would be a good way to recover from the ordeal. After browsing for 15 minutes, I headed back to the retirement section to make sure nothing new hadn’t come in. Actually, I did notice a new one by Richard Carlson, (the “don’t sweat the small stuff” guy) titled something like “don’t sweat retirement.” I grabbed it and headed over to the coffee shop for the obligatory cappuccino. As I was sitting there in the cafe reading the book, my thoughts turned to the projects I have languishing on my to do lists. Right then and there, I wanted to start working on them!
Just to name a few:
1) debug my weather station software. (baro doesn’t work)
2) get the 802.11 wireless lan card on my dual boot pc (XP/linux) working under linux. (works under XP.)
3) once 2) is finished, get my website running on my local lan.
4) get my bluetooth GPRS phone talking to my bluetooth laptop.
5) download the new pocket pc operating system (Windows Mobile 2003) to my IPAQ h5450.
and on and on. it’s never ending…
The question of the moment is, why don’t I get inspired to do these projects WHEN I’M AT HOME? It always happens when I am away from home.
It could be that getting out in the real world, surrounded by people who look busy, and surrounded by the latest books on every conceivable topic, has something to do with it. Is there any way to duplicate this type of environment at home?
I met a friend at the bookstore by accident and I commented to him about this. He said the problem was my home office. At his house, he’s got a nice big office with a window and a beautiful desk to work on. But the most important thing, he said, is a door with a lock. He literally kisses his kids “goodbye” in the morning (three year old twins), and they know not to knock on his door or make noise in that part of the house until quitting time (6pm).
This is interesting, but doesn’t work for me due to the size of my house. I think the bottom line, short of buying a new house, is to just go to Borders more(G).
