my own barber

I’ve been cutting my own hair for quite some time now. More than 10 years but less than 20. And, not to toot my own horn too loudly, I’d have to say I’m pretty good at it. John inspired me to document this process. First you have to start with the proper tools:

This is my second hair clipper. My first clipper was a Sears special. Word of advice: Don’t spare any expense on clippers. You want something that cuts through hair like a hot knife through butter.

Second thing you need to do is go to your bathroom (hopefully with no carpeting,) get naked, and bring this:

Now comes the part everyones scared to do, but is actually quite easy. I experimented a bit when I first did it and usually ended up looking like a private first class. IE, didn’t leave enough on the top. I decided later, if I just left a tad more hair on the top, I could increase my rank to at least a Lieutenant Colonel.

Here’s the results:

The final step, of course, is to sweep up and hit the shower. The whole process took a grand total of 30 minutes, and usually lasts for 4-6 months. It’s true the cut is not that stylish. But, with a pair of wrap around sunglasses, you will find you are not hit up by street people for money. Also, there’s the added bonus of no annoying sports chit chat with a barber!
