Yipee, it’s Thursday and the weekend is starting!
As homeschool parents we’re around our kids pretty much all day, every day. I remember asking another homeschool parent at an unschooling conference if they ever got tired of having the kids at home all the time. They said something to the effect that it takes some getting used to, but it’s worth it in the long run. And also: why do you have kids if you don’t want to be around them?
I think it’s sad that most families these days, hurry the kids off to school so both parents can work, shuffle the kids from school to “after school”, and then once everyone gets home, the kids get maybe an hour with their parents because they have homework and they need to get to bed so they can wake up early.
In any event, I will say that it IS really nice to get a break. For us, two breaks in fact: Thursday AND Friday (hence our “weekend”.) Thursday we have a regular babysitter and from 5 to 10 we go out to eat, hit the Barnes and Noble and browse until west coast swing dance lessons start at 8. Friday we take advantage of a parents night out at a local church from 6 to 10:30. The kids get play time, snacks and movies, so they like it too.
I blogged on this before, but I’ll say it again. If you are married, you need once a week quality time with your spouse. Spend the money on a REGULAR babysitter. It’s worth every penny.
