Washcloth or hands?

My son, Q, is 8 years old and we are visiting the grandparents on my side at the moment. Something funny has just come up that I haven’t thought about in a while. Although Q gives himself baths these days, he still needs help with the shampooing. I’ve tried to convince him showers are easier, but he’s not having any of it.

In any case, Q was bathing and his grandmom passing by in the hall noticed that he wasn’t using a wash cloth. “Q, honey, you need to soap up with a wash cloth if you are going to get clean. Luckily I heard her, and offered to give Q some help. When she left, I told Q to not worry about washcloths and tossed it aside.

I was several years in college before I figured out you didn’t need to use a washcloth. Heather told me she had a roommate in college that inquired about where her washcloth was. So it appears this is as much an issue as the “over” versus “under” battle of toilet paper.

Just to give my two cents, when you use your hands to soap up, you are not only getting clean but also checking yourself out for cancerous growths and other bad stuff. Also, assuming you are reusing, you are probably exposing yourself to mold and mildew.

So what are you? Washcloth or hands?
