Chocolate, et al.

I’ve been thinking about how my taste for sweets has changed over the years. I can remember a long time ago, when I actually wanted pretty much anything. Spree, candy corn, M&M’s, peppermint lifesavers, caramel, bubble gum, almost any chocolate bar. It seems as though candy was the first to go. Chocolate bars took longer (college), but their appeal also left me.

I think part of the problem with chocolate bars for me, is that almost everything is MILK chocolate. Why is that? Is there some kind of milk chocolate conspiracy? What’s even more interesting is that dark chocolate is good for you! It’s richer in antioxidants (brain food) than even fruits and veggies. But if you eat MILK chocolate, or consume the chocolate with milk, then you lose all the benefits. Reference: this article for further info.

But anyway, these days, I eat no candy or chocolate bars. Heather bought me a dark chocolate Hershey’s bar for my birthday, and I tried it and didn’t like it. I don’t know if this is a common thing as people age. If it is, it’s sad and ironic. Here we are, able to buy any amount of candy we desire, and we don’t desire any!

There may be something deeper going on here. Maybe, when you can have any amount of something that you want, you lose interest. My kids can watch as much TV as they want. They watch maybe an hour and a half a day. They can stay up as late as they want. They crash around 10:30. They can sleep as late as they want. They get up around 7.

Maybe that’s it. Maybe not. It’s all speculation. I guess I should should come clean and admit there is one thing I can’t stop eating… Nestles semisweet chocolate chips – cold, i.e. kept in the freezer. Luckily, our grocery store keeps them on the baking aisle so I can avoid them fairly easily.
