PHSO: Beware

“P” stands for Partially.

It’s been a very long time since I posted, so I thought I would just give a run down of what’s happened the last month. We all went to Dallas for the “Dallas Dance” West Coast Swing competition. Heather and I both competed and didn’t move up even to the semi’s. But we loved it anyway. The kids were at relatives and we got 4 days in a nice hotel by ourselves and LOTS of dancing and eating out.

After that we stayed another week and visited friends. I always get a kick out of using priceline.com to nab my favorite hotel, The Galleria Hilton Suites for $50 a night. Not bad for a $169 two room suite. Let me know if you want details on how to do this.

I did have some bad news. I always visit my nose doctor when I come to dallas because I have a history of nasal polyps. Seven surgery’s later I’ve been free of them since 2000. Well this time he “found something.” Not polyps, but “bumps” that look like they might become polyps. So he’s bombing them with medicine and I have to go back to dallas in October for him to tell me whether it worked.

“H” stands for Hydrogenated.

I’m working hard on a new website for commercial real estate! This is a new business opportunity I am pursuing. It’s challenging but it’s doable. Perfect conditions for Flow. If you don’t know what flow is, read “Finding Flow” by Csikszentmihalyi. The pursuit of happiness is really not the goal of life. It’s really the pursuit of flow. Anyway, I’m enjoying this new work. It’s good (self imposed) structure….for the time being.

I’m really loving Netflix. Heather and I watch movies after the kids are in bed, and I’m getting to see some movies I could never find at Blockbuster. If you like movies, and your approach is to go to Blockbuster and browse, try netflix.com. I’ve watched about 50 movies and my movie list still has 113 on it.

“S” stands for Soybean.

Some series shows I’ve been watching on DVD from netflix:

Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Six Feet Under season 2.
Coupling
The Larry Sanders Show

Some recently seen movies I liked:

The Butterfly Effect: Director’s Cut
Amelie
13 Conversations About One Thing
A Simple Plan
The Ice Storm

“O” is for Oil.

While I was waiting at a Walgreens in Dallas to get my prescriptions, I picked up a small little book on trans fat and started reading. Bottom line, this stuff is nasty shit. It does not occur in nature. It causes high levels of bad cholesterol (LDL). You know, I don’t think the stuff is that bad for you in small doses, but unfortunately IT’S IN ALMOST EVERYTHING WE EAT.

I’ve been reading labels and losing some of my favorite foods. Do you like Fig Newtons? Ritz Crackers? Oreos? ….Chock full of it. I’ve been using Coffeemate Hazelnut creamer in my coffee for years. Not anymore. I like to eat sardines on crackers. All crackers have it. I love KFC. Not anymore! Most fast foods have it. Fried Chicken is one of the worst. Taco shells. General rule: if it’s crispy, it’s got it.

I just got finished writing this email to Kraft. Not that it will help things. But posting it on the web might help it a tiny bit.

Dear Kraft,
This is just a comment. I’ve been buying POST SELECTS, GREAT GRAINS RAISINS DATES PECANS for years thinking it was good for me. I’ve recently read all about trans fat, and have been reading labels.  The stuff is in everything! And I was very saddened to see it’s in Great Grains. Just thought I would let you know I stopped buying it as of today.

Could you PLEASE cut the trans fat out of your “Select” cereals that are billed as being healthy?

Thanks,
chris
