Just spun up this blog on a VPS out of London. My original goal was not a blog. It was a blog AND a searx search engine on one server. I still have not accomplished this. I know it’s possible because you can do it with yunohost. But I want to do it myself. After I got the blog running, I decided to import my old blog from 2003-2006. This is where persistence comes in.
Kudos go to typepad for leaving my blog up for 20 years! That’s impressive. The VPS i’m using charges $10/mo, so for 20 years, that’s $2400. Over that 20 years, I think i backed it up several times, but I can’t find a single backup on any of my old computers. That’s the problem! How do you preserve your data. Somewhat similar to asking how do you preserve your money? Michael Saylor addresses this rather well, by saying the only sure fire way of doing it is by holding your wealth in bitcoin.
But even if I deposited $2400 (in bitcoin), 20 years ago, on the VPS (which didn’t even exist back then) what guarantee is there that the VPS will be around in the NEXT 20 yrs? None! Ideally, I hold my own data in the form of my own server at home. But then you have to deal with accidents, hardware going bad, etc. It’s not an easy problem. It seems like it’s just luck any way you look at it, that something persists over time.
In any event, i would love to send some sats to Typepad as a thank you, but alas, they dont accept Bitcoin. They want your credit card. Ah no.
